Santa
Barbara Horse Show
All
I can say is WOW...we had a tremendous show at Santa Barbara, and
were thrilled with the number of quality Friesians that filled the
Friesian classes. We took two geldings and 1 stallion to the Earl
Warren Fairgrounds, for 4 days of "hot" competition at this
"A" USA Equestrian event.
Wednesday
started
with our newest addition, the 6 yr old Anton son, Majestic, competing
against 11 other Friesians to win the Friesian under Saddle Walk and
Trot class. Shakespeare, a wonderful gelding sold by Black Sterling
Friesians to Kimberly Ramirez in Santa Cruz, was 3rd in this hotly
contested event.
Blu drove Stormy in two driving classes, and this time the HORSE seemed
to count more than the carriage, as Stormy and Blu were stand outs,
and they handily were Reserve in the Friesian Driving Qualifier and
Championship. Our good friend, Bruce Griffin, sold an awesome gelding
he showed last year, Crusader, and Crusader thrilled his driver by
winning both the qualifier and championship.
Black Sterling again thrille
d
the audience and was Reserve in the Open Stallion-Gelding class. Blu
talked Janna into letting him show Sterling back in the Amateur Friesian
Under Saddle class. All three Goldman's were in this large class,
whereby Majestic and Janna were winners, with Sterling and Blu coming
in 3rd, and Stormy and Julia a close 4th.
Julia was not too pleased to be beat by her dad...
but
then again, there IS only one Sterling, a Friesian that appears to
have an automatic transmission and goes on cruise control, even when
the competition is 3 horses deep. After Majestic won the Amateur Friesian
under Saddle Class, we let one of his good fans from Oregon take him
for a spin in the warm up arena, and Majestic once again proved to
his fans that the Friesian is not only beautiful, with gorgeous movement,
but he showed how good natured and easy going they can be.
Julia's work with Anne Speck at Rancho Del Mar has really paid off
this summer. She and Stormy were victorious in the Friesian Under
Saddle Novice Rider class.
Julia
and Stormy will next be competing next weekend at the Seaside Horse
Show, against saddlebreds, morgans, arabians, and national show horses.
At the last minute, we decided to take Majestic back in the Open Friesian
Stake, and we knew there
would
be mares in the class. At the suggestion of a saddlebred trainer,
our groom, Francisco rubbed Vick's Vapor Rub in Majestic's nostrils...the
thought was that this would make it so he couldn't smell the mares
in the class, and would thus concentrate better, and really perform.
Well, when I hit the in-gate with him, the Vick's must have started
burning the inside of his nose like mad, and Majestic threw his head
up, nose out, and was NOT happy. We struggled through the class, still
finishing second in a strong field of Friesians, but learning a hard
lesson that we should NEVER try something new in the show ring!
After returning home, we were informed by the central Calif Friesian
Club that Julia and Stormy Seas were highpoint Friesian winners of
this years Santa Barbara show:) A photo and story will appear in the
next Friesian publication.
Stormy is an excellent example of a 6 yr old gelding that we imported
to sell last year, and now is winning under saddle with 14 yr old
Julia Goldman, and getting top ribbons in the driving division with
her dad!!
